My bespoke client is Ruomeng, by interviewing with her, I knew that she likes nature, animals, natural materials like wood and stone because she likes objects that with a sense of volume. She also likes drawing, watercolour painting, and she likes soft and harmonious colour palette, especially yellowish earth tone. She has no siblings, the environment she feels most comfortable is home, she likes curling up in bed to play mobile phone, reading and drawing. When I asked her what she fears? Her answer is being lonely. And she told me that she kind of misses home. Therefore, I thought she is kind of homesick, I wanted to make a jewellery piece gives her a comfortable home-like atmosphere, which can accompany her all the time.

Today, I experimented the finish of the wooden pencil holder and ring base.

I decided to give the holder a silver finish as it insinuates the modern building, I tried two methods, one is using silver spray paint, the other one is to use silver foil. In the beginning, I sprayed too much on the test piece, the surface is quite messy. I applied another test piece with silver foil by PVA, it is not that quick as spray paint, the finish is quite shiny and glossy. It did not create a sense of modern architecture, in that I tried to use the silver spray paint again. This time I sprayed a thin layer on the test piece each time, and it looks quite good, the finish is matte, it exerts the exactly effect what I want. Therefore I decided to use silver spray paint as the finish on my final piece.

For the wooden ring base, I tried stain and dye techniques, I applied the old-based antique pine paint on both MDF and plywood, the finish is quite shiny and glossy, the colour looks too bright which is not what I want. Then I tried the dye technique, it is water-based, the finish is matt, which it did not change the organic effect of the material, the coat is thin, so I need to apply a few layers. I quite like this finish. Therefore I will apply it in my final ring piece.

As my initial thought is to make a jewellery piece conveys a comfortable home atmosphere, I was thinking to make a massive necklace piece around the neck, as she is surrounded by the necklace she would feel the warmth from it, I was thinking using would pieces around the neck in the beginning because my client likes wood material and the aroma of natural forest, the idea is inspired by Dorothea Pruhl's necklace piece Motten(Moths). However, I thought using wood piece around the neck might hurt the skin, therefore I looked at more soft materials such as memory form as I quite like the touch of it, and it is also a type of materials for the pillow which would make my client associate with home. I also researched other soft materials, which I quite like the filling cotton, the touch is very soft, it is much cheaper than the memory form, you will feel warmth when you touch it. I think it might be an interesting material to work with.

In addition to the neck area, I also thought about a pendant, which consists of the elements of warm light, bed, pillow that let my client recall her home.  I quite like the idea of using the yellow acrylic board to create the atmosphere of home, as the yellow acrylic would grow warm yellow light. However, I do not like my design of the pendant as it is too literal. I am kind of stuck with the idea.

As I was stuck with the idea which giving a home-like atmosphere to my client, I was thinking another direction, which about her interest in drawing. As my client is not a fashion lover, she does not care about fashion very much, I was thinking a brooch with the element of coat hanger and pencil pendant to show her personality. But I thought it would be too literal and boring to just wear the pencil. I thought it would be much interesting if my client could actually use the pencil, which I was thinking making a necklace with a pencil holder-like pendant. I was thinking to combine the two ideas, which creates a scene that in the evening, my client was lying on the bed with the warm light and doing some relaxing activities like drawing.

Inspired by Peter Antor's architectural ring, I was thinking to give the pendant a kind of architectural form as it reminded me of Chinese high building that my client lived before. I also added the yellow acrylic board to my design as it would create a warm, comfortable atmosphere. Because we use fingers to hold the pencils to draw therefore I also thought place the design on the finger rather than a pendant.

I looked at Larasati Dewangga Putri's pencil rings, the colour palette in her ring design is pretty bright and colourful. I like the way the designer uses the colour pencils to make a whole ring, it is very creative and interesting. The ring has not just ornamental function but also practical function. I think it is a good idea to give my design both ornamental and functional value. Because I think my client is a realistic person. As she told me she likes nature and her memorable place is a mountain that closes to her old house, but when I asked her if she would like to live in a wooden house, she said no because it is not convenient. Therefore I thought it would be good if I could make my ring design functional so that she could really use it to draw wherever she is.

Inspired by Peter Antor's bench pin reliquary jewellery piece, it is consist of two parts, the small box could be taken out by a rotate knob. In that I was thinking to make my ring base detachable by inserting magnets, and drill a hole to the ring so that a pencil could insert into it for drawing.

Today, I started making my final piece and tested each element in my design.

At first, I selected a few wood piece and drilled holes on each of them to see which type of woods is better to use for the pencil holder part. And I found out that MDF is the best wood because the drill machine drilled a nice circular hole on it. Therefore I decided to use MDF as the material of the holder. I also tested the thickness of the MDF with pencils to see which looks nicer to use. I found that the thickness of thin MDF even smaller than the width of a pencil, it does not look nice, in that I decided to use a slightly thick MDF piece to dill holes onto it. After I had done it, I insert colour pencils through the two holes and played with it. I found that there are a lot of ways to insert pencils, as there are seven holes on the wood piece; when I inserted the colour pencils with an interval of every two holes, I tried to put my hand through the gaps, and I just found out the holder became a drawing machine! I could hold it freely and do the mark-making. Because of this discovery, I changed my final design slightly as I add an oval hole on the acrylic board enable the hand cross it. Now, this ring design becomes multifunctional, the client could draw with the ring base and also the holder.

I also made a wooden ring base today, I sanded it to give it a smooth edge which adds a sense of gentleness to it. I tried to drill a hole below the big hole for finger put through, but the ring broke into two, I think it is because the power of the drill machine is too strong, therefore I think for next one, I will drill a hole underneath it.

Today, I was trying to solve the technical problem - how to make the ring base detachable to the holder. I tried to use magnetic tape, stuck it onto the bottom of the holder and top of the ring base, while the magnetism is too weak, it did not work properly, therefore I thought I could only use magnets to do it.
